Proverbs 3:16-18 She (Wisdom) offers you long life in her right hand, and riches in her left. She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying. Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.

I read this on a January morning earlier this year and just delighted in it. I could not wait to share it with you! The wisdom God shares with us here is an encouragement to wrap ourselves around wisdom and hold on. We are given the imagery of a tree. I couldn't help but imagine the garden of Eden with the Tree of Life thriving amid all the living things. The wind rustling its leaves, the sunshine dappling on the ground, a beautiful scent hanging in the pure air. God invites me to step forward and wrap my arms around its velvety bark and never let go. Once upon a time, we were barred from that garden. Sin and death barred us from that tree of life. Yet, through Jesus, we can have an everlasting life. Through wisdom, which begins with the fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7), we can approach the tree of life and embrace it.

Not only did God give us access to Wisdom but there is more: “She will guide you down delightful paths”. Can you think back to a time where you received biblical wisdom and obeyed it? How did it turn out? Delightful? I can give a full hearted witness to seeing this often in my life. When I seek Him and obey, while it might feel odd at first, the fruit is real and it is good. That’s not all! What’s more: it is satisfying! When I approach my marriage His way: so satisfying. When I order my days His way: so satisfying. When I serve others joyfully: so satisfying. When I share Him with others: so satisfying. Can you think of a time when you did something your own way or aimed for a worldly goal? Did it satisfy you?

I went to college for the degree, and nothing more. I just needed something to fall back on. Don't get me wrong, a degree offers a good toolset that can be used for society and serving others. My mistake, however, was relying on myself and not asking Him for wisdom about anything beyond, or other than, attaining a degree. Is now the time for college? Will a degree actually help me with what You've called me to? What's the best way to steward this time of my life?  God would have given me wisdom in abundance anytime I asked these questions. By the time I did, I was already taking classes and growing full of frustration, confusion, and a fair amount of student loan debt, all of which could have been avoided had I sought His wisdom first. I gained some life experience which I’m grateful for, but maybe I would have used those years differently. God will give wisdom in abundance to all who ask. Seek out that beautiful tree of life. Embrace it and hold on tight!

Challenge

Read Solomon's story in 1 Kings 3:1-15. Write your answers in a journal using these questions as a prompt:

What stands out to you?

What does God want you to know about Himself from this story?

How does God want you to respond or what action do you need to take?

  • Proverbs 31:25-27 "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness."

At the start of each season, don’t we all want to look ahead with laughter? We try to enter a season with hope and joy. We think we can make it good by planning it out, self improvement, closing out the previous chapter and maybe even trying to forget it. When I quiet myself, open my bible and read Proverbs 31, I end up thinking of looking forward differently. I think of the future in a more longline way: not cutting myself off from all that was before with a “fresh” start. Rather I can look at my journey in a continuous line of growth. When I, day by day, set my eyes on Jesus, let Him fill me with biblical wisdom, and live my life His way (obey) I genuinely can laugh freely without fear of what may come. Jesus assures us that in this life we will have trouble. The Word also assures us that the Lord intends to give us hope and a future. This passage in Proverbs provides some practical tools to help us live without fear.

    1. A fearlessly joyful woman clothes herself, puts on strength and dignity. She doesn’t accept indecency or helplessness. She finds ways to live and serve with integrity where God has her.

    2. A fearlessly joyful woman speaks with wisdom and gives instructions with kindness. She educates herself, looks for ways to grow, practices what she has learned, and then with sincere kindness disciples others.

    3. A fearlessly joyful woman carefully watches over her household. She doesn’t put up with laziness from herself or those in her household. She doesn’t leave her responsibilities for her children or husband to do. In her workplace outside of the house, she doesn't leave her colleagues to cover her responsibilities. She learns how her house works and shows up to do the work. Her husband and kids know they can depend on her. They know she is vigilant and diligent. In turn others are encouraged to do likewise.

Struggles will still come to the woman of God but because she abides with Him, there is nothing to be afraid of. She walks with Him and in His ways. Not even death can separate her from Him. Therefore she is content, full of peace and laughing.

    Challenge

Ask the Lord to search your heart and hold it up to the light of this passage. Maybe you need to focus on “clothing yourself with strength” or “clothing yourself with dignity”. Or possibly ask and seek the Lord for true wisdom. This could look like reading a passage or Proverb every day for a month and writing down what you learn. This could look like cutting off a worldly source of wisdom like social media or books that point you to yourself rather than Jesus. Maybe you have let laziness creep in. Letting things fall into disarray and chaos leads to fearfulness. If you are living with fear, using these tools from the Lord will help to root it out. Use a journal to record what God says, which tool(s) He says to use, and what happens as a result.

Hi, I'm kensie!

I am married to Pastor Adam and I grew up here at Valley Church. He and I were married at Valley Church in 2009 early in Adam's 16-year run on staff before God called us to Florida in 2023. Through a wild turn of events, God called us back to Valley Church in 2025, and after a prayerful process, we returned with joy and gratitude- we’re so happy to be here with you!

A bit about me: Adam and I have three children named Larissa, McKinley, and Malachi. I love being outside walking and riding my bike. I love homemaking. For most of my life I struggled to read my bible everyday but finally made it a real habit the year I turned thirty. When taking in the Word became a consistent rhythm, it gave me a regular pause with the Lord. It gave me the small, daily opportunity to grow up more in my faith, to become a self feeding, adult believer more than a childish spiritual consumer who relies on others to feed me.

Over the years Valley has offered a variety of opportunities for women, from bible studies to conferences to small groups to serving opportunities. Returning home I had an idea to offer a simple monthly encouragement. My hope with this is to create a recurring thread of connection. I plan to share a biblical word of encouragement followed by a challenge for the month ahead. These monthly challenges will be aimed at compelling each of us to make an upwards or outwards investment:

  • Upwards: invest in your connection with the Lord. This will often be a bible reading challenge. Always be reading the Word! No devotional or book, no matter how timely or well-intended, can replace Truth that comes straight from the mouth of God. Experience Him directly through reading the bible yourself and obeying it.
  • Outwards: invest in your connection with people. God’s love language is when we love others. You cannot love Him and neglect people. Taking steps towards others, joining or leading a small group, older women training up younger women, living with a posture of grace and mercy towards others - all of these and more are a blessing to the heart of God and makes you more connected to your church family.

Thank you for reading this monthly encouragement and challenge! I pray that it is a useful blessing to you as you look ahead to each new month. I pray that it encourages your connection to the Lord, your Valley church family, and your neighbors.
